Covid-19 Case Study
Photobiomodulation for Restoring
Taste and Smell Post-Covid-19
This study explored the potential benefits of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) for reducing irritability and other symptoms in chThis case study explores the use of a treatment called photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) to help restore taste and smell in two patients who lost these senses after having COVID-19.
PBMT uses light from a special laser to stimulate nerves and promote healing. The two patients, a 68-year-old woman and a 40-year-old woman, both experienced long-term loss of taste and smell (known as anosmia and ageusia) after recovering from COVID-19. Each patient received a single session of PBMT using a high-powered therapeutic laser. Within 24 hours, both patients reported significant improvement in their ability to taste and smell, and this improvement continued in follow-up visits.
The therapy helped the patients regain these senses and improve their quality of life. This study suggests that PBMT could be a promising treatment for people suffering from sensory loss after COVID-19, though more research is needed to confirm these findings and refine the treatment approach.
